Work Area 4 – To embed EU Livestock Network into AKIS

WA4 of the LiveNet project, led by Highclere Consulting, focuses on embedding livestock advisory systems into Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS) at national, regional, and EU levels. The goal is to strengthen collaboration between advisors and key AKIS actors, ensuring long-term integration of livestock advisory networks into broader innovation ecosystems. WA4 is structured around three work packages—WP9, WP10, and WP11—which collectively drive the connection, expansion, and institutional embedding of these networks.

WP9, “Connection and Collaboration with National and EU AKIS Ecosystems,” expands upon the AKIS mapping initiated in the project’s early stages. It identifies relevant projects, organisations, policy frameworks, and value chain initiatives related to sustainable livestock. Through targeted strategies, WP9 aims to connect LiveNet livestock advisors with critical AKIS actors and highlight gaps in current advisory systems. A series of 15 online workshops will facilitate exchange and learning among advisory network members at both national and EU levels, focusing on emerging themes in sustainable livestock.

Building on these connections, WP10, “Fostering AKIS Integration and Expansion of Livestock Networks,” is dedicated to developing adaptive networking strategies in collaboration with National Network Leaders (NNLs), Associated Network Leaders (ANLs), and Thematic Leaders. These strategies aim to integrate advisors into national and regional AKIS, EU-level research and innovation initiatives, and activities within the EU CAP Network. WP10 also supports the initial implementation of these strategies, laying the groundwork for deeper, more effective collaboration.

WP11, “Embedding Livestock Advisors and Advisory Networks into Evolving AKIS Ecosystems,” continues this integration process by reinforcing the role of livestock advisors in sustainable AKIS structures. It also focuses on drawing policy-relevant insights from the project’s activities. Two high-level EU workshops and a dedicated Policy Roadmap will support the formulation of strategic recommendations to guide the long-term development of AKIS in the context of sustainable livestock farming.

Together, the three work packages under WA4 ensure that livestock advisors are not only active participants but also integral contributors to the future of knowledge-driven, sustainable agriculture across Europe.
